Chestnut and Bay, Sorrel and - BROWN? The distinctions are in the redness of the coat, the color of mane and tail. Most Thoroughbreds are dark bays, many so dark that they appear black. The famous Secretariat was chestnut, his mane and tail being the same beautiful red-brown as his coat. Various breeds have their own descriptions of chestnut. For instance, the Suffolk, a breed of draft horse, has seven different distinctions - yellow, light, copper, gold, red, dark and liver. The horse caps here are in two shades - brown and dark brown.
